Why am I getting no matches on Hinge? A free 5-point check

It's rarely one thing, and it's almost never "you're unattractive." Most of the time it's a profile that doesn't give her anything to react to. Here's a free checklist to run on your own profile in about ten minutes.

The short answer

Start with your first photo and your prompts. If she can't tell which person you are, or your prompts could belong to anyone, she has no reason to like or comment. Fix those before you touch anything else.

1. Your first photo has to answer "which one is you?"

Your first photo does most of the work. Group shots, sunglasses, a hat plus distance, or a dim bar photo all make her work to figure out who she's looking at. Most people won't. Lead with a clear, well-lit photo of just you, face visible, ideally smiling, taken by someone else.

Quick test: show your first photo to a friend for two seconds. Can they describe you? If not, swap it.

2. Your photos tell one story, not five

Six selfies in the same car says "this is all there is." Aim for range: one clear face shot, one full-body, one doing something you actually do (cooking, hiking, playing music), one with friends where you're easy to spot. Drop the fish, the gym-mirror selfie and anything more than a few years old.

3. Your prompts give her nothing to reply to

On Hinge, people often like or comment on a specific prompt. "I like travelling and hanging out with friends" gives her nothing to grab. Specific beats clever:

  • Flat: "I'm looking for someone who loves to laugh."
  • Better: "Two-truths-and-a-lie: I've been to 14 countries, I make my own pasta, I cried at Toy Story 4." (Use your real details.)

A good prompt makes it easy to send one line back. That's the whole job.

4. Your filters might be doing the rejecting

Very tight age ranges, distance or "dealbreaker" settings can shrink the pool before anyone sees you. If you're in a smaller city, loosen distance first. This isn't an algorithm trick, it's just a bigger pool.

5. Consistency beats bursts

Opening the app once a week, liking 40 people and disappearing usually goes worse than a few thoughtful likes most days. When you like someone, comment on a specific photo or prompt instead of sending a blank like. We don't know Hinge's internal ranking, and nobody outside Hinge does, so ignore anyone selling "secret algorithm hacks."

What not to do

  • Don't delete and re-create your account every week hoping for a "boost."
  • Don't add negativity to your profile ("no drama," "if you can't handle me at my worst…").
  • Don't change everything at once, or you won't know what helped.

If you're getting matches but they go nowhere, that's a different problem. Read why dating app conversations die.
